What is there to do locally?
We are situated in the heart of Cranborne Chase, a National Landscape and designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which covers 380 square miles of countryside, overlapping the boundaries of Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset. The landscape is an International Dark Sky Reserve, one of only 21 in the world, recognised for the quality of its night skies and a fantastic place to go stargazing.
The diverse panoramic landscape is rich in flora and fauna, discover rare orchids and butterflies as you walk across the majestic open downland, or take in the archaeological and historical sites nearby, regular digs are still making significant discoveries about our heritage. The church and Pagan Rings at Knowlton and the Mysterious Dorset Cursus are close by as well as many Neolithic and Roman routes as well as Bronze Age barrows.
Local villages offer a bountiful selection of pubs and restaurants as well as village shops, many selling produce sourced from the local estates. Cranborne itself has been an inspiration for authors and poets alike over the years with Tess of the D’urbervilles by Thomas Hardy and poems by Rupert Brooke both featuring the Inn at Cranborne in their work.
Cranborne Lodge is also positioned on the edge of the New Forest National Park which has the largest area of heathland in the whole of Europe, making it the perfect location for long leisurely walks and adventurous exploration.
New Forest ponies roam free and are often found strolling through the charming villages, and across the vast space of stunning countryside.
This national park is home to historical villages and towns, each with their own characterful features and stories to tell.
